YOU ARE

'YOU ARE' is a dark ritual of devotion through self-sacrifice. Pay witness to the ceremony, as a body is pushed to extreme limits to reach ascension, enlightenment, and a connection to something greater than themselves.

Inspired by the intense dedication present in the rituals of many spiritual and religious practices, 'YOU ARE' explores the idea of what the body and mind must go through to persevere through pain and exhaustion.

COMPOSER NED BECKLEY

Ned Beckley is a Fremantle based artist with a multi-faceted practice in which sound and

music is the key material of communication and investigation. He co-runs Envelope Audio

with Josh Hogan, a facility focused on music production and audio post for longform media.

Ned has a diverse body of work that spans electronic performance and recordings,

soundtracks and sound design for film and TV, installation, dance and various digital

multimedia frameworks. He has studied cinema at Melbourne University and worked at the

National Film & Sound Archive, both of which have served to hone Beckley’s understanding

of the synergy between film and sound.

COSTUME DESIGNER SORCHA WHALLEY

Sorcha is a Western Australian based costume designer and maker, specialising in theatre costuming, with experience in photo-shoots, personal wear and much more.

Since graduating from The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, undertaking a Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of Performing Arts majoring in Production and Design: Costume Construction and Management. Sorcha has gained a multitude of knowledge and experience within the costume industry.

Sorcha's knowledge for making costumes for theatre extends past simply creating what's drawn on the page, she works with the designer to achieve their desired look, that may not always be well translated in their design.

Sorcha has extensive knowledge in Tailoring, Period Garments, Pattern Drafting, Art Finishing, Millinery, Costume Management, Bump in/Bump out processes, Stretch-wear, Corsetry and Tutu Construction.

LIGHTING DESIGNER MARK HASLAM

Mark's practice is a hybrid of technical production, design, direction and performance, with a

particular focus upon raw performance styles and integration of media into contemporary

performance. He’s worked with many leading Australian and international contemporary arts

companies across performance, dance, music and visual arts, touring work across 4 continents.

DIRECTORS NOTES

We at OFF-base Dance are very excited to bring you our premier work ‘YOU ARE’.

We feel very honoured to have the chance to work with such an amazing team, who have helped us make this show a reality.

It has been and challenging and excited journey to get to this point, and we hope that the show will give insight into the quality work OFF-base will continue to bring.
